Metals Monday: Silver Breaks Out

Commodity Callout

Silver is one to watch, with an upward ascent that isn’t subject to pullbacks other commodities are seeing.

Metal Price Update

Gold — Gold has its eye set on new highs. It started the week around $3780 per ounce, moved up past $3800 and then pulled back to end the week just under that. With volatility and uncertainty becoming more apparent, it could go well beyond those levels before long.

Silver — Where gold started a run and then pulled back, silver just kept going. It started the week around $44.28 per ounce and ended around $46.50, so it could be eyeing new highs at $48, $50, and beyond.

Copper — A supply shock sent copper prices soaring. It started around $4.57 per pound and ended around $4.77. Indonesia's Grasberg, the world's second-largest copper mine, experienced a disruption in operations and now analysts say much, much higher prices are a possibility in the short term.

Lithium Carbonate — Lithium held steady from after turning things around from a recent slump. Over the week it held in the $10,300 range. There may be some upside sooner than later, however, as the Trump White House expressed interest in buying a stake in a domestic lithium producer.

Uranium — The US is fully committed to building its strategic reserve, and the price of uranium is beginning to reflect that. It rocketed from around $78 to $83.45 per pound and, like other commodities this week, that could be only the beginning.

Company Callout

Lithium Americas may be one company to watch in the very near future, thanks to the Trump administration taking a possible interest in investing in it. The rumor alone caused the price to jump 125%, so if this actually happens, the returns could be far, far greater than that.

Like rare earths, lithium is being viewed as a critical metal so the government will do everything it can to secure a domestic supply and move away from foreign reliance. That opens the door for investors to get in with the right companies.
